Growth of the Rooftop Solar Scheme
More than 50 lakh households across the country have received benefits under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana since the initiative was launched in February 2024. Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi shared these details in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha.
The scheme functions as a demand-driven program available to all residential consumers who possess a grid-connected electricity connection through their local distribution companies. Eligible households can utilize the provisions to install rooftop solar systems.
Financial Assistance and Budget Allocation
Official data indicates that central financial assistance exceeding 28,000 crore rupees in subsidies has been disbursed nationwide since the rollout of the program. To support the expanding adoption of solar energy, the budgetary allocation for the initiative has seen an upward revision.

Capacity Addition and Renewable Targets
Implementation of the rooftop solar initiative has contributed notably to the national non-fossil fuel capacity goals. According to the Ministry, the installations have added a solar power generation capacity exceeding 14.65 gigawatts up to July of the current year.
This capacity expansion supports India’s broader national objective of achieving 500 gigawatts of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by the year 2030, aligning sustainable power generation with residential electricity access.
